Description

It takes an experienced restaurateur to own three successful restaurants in Mallorca. Restaurants come and go with the seasons, here. Italian-born Marco di Loreto is a maverick restaurateur on the island, with 3 successful restaurants in Palma, Mar de NudosRestaurant and Brasserie being on our favourites list. Catering to a yachting crowd, the restaurant sits on the waterfront of the Marina Moll Vell in Palma, and eating in Mar de Nudos is not unlike eating in a modern day Blythe Spirit anchored for a long lunch, you are that close to schooners and yachts and the lapping waves on the dock.

Extensive separate terraces are decorated in modern nautical style: wooden plank flooring, ceilings that fold away wide open to the sky and comfortable rope chairs help you get your sea legs. Intimate tables add to the maritime sensation of dining at Mar de Nudos. Service is bustling, professional and well informed.

Two chefs in the kitchen are working together to create the interesting and innovative fare at Mar de Nudos. Chef Diego Buitrago – a sushi expert – is responsible for the Japanesedishes that are popular with many regulars. Italian-born Chef Giovanni Chiodi is running the kitchen for the Mediterranean cuisine on the binary menu. Unlike most restaurants, they have chose to keep the culinary offerings distinctly Italian and Japanese, and the flavours are clean and authentic. For starters from the Italian menu, the burrata fresca, an Italian staple of fresh burrata cheese with tomato confit and pesto is delicious and fragrant. The Japanese tuna tartar was equally satisfying. Tagliatelle con trufas was decadent, you can’t go wrong here. Lobster Niguiri from the Japanese menu is the equivalent of a Japanese sandwich and a rare offering outside of Japan. The rice was toothsome and the seaweed and lobster tasted like the sea. For dessert, the tiramisudelivered creamy layers of mascarpone and cocoa, perfectly sweet and rich.

Mar de Nudos is the kind of restaurant you only find in the Mediterranean; a combination of refined and casual. You would be comfortable here dressed for dinner, or in a kaftan thrown over your bikini. After your meal, a walk along the water to one of the many lively bars in la Llonja or the Old Town is the perfect nightcap.
